It is quite a long party in the back for one Tennessee .

Knoxville nurse Tami Manis has earned the Guinness Record for the longest of any female — with her luxurious locks coming in at 5 ft, 8 in long

“I’ve been blessed that my hair grows, and now it’s the ’s longest and I’m very happy with it,” said Manis, a public health nurse who serves in the Tennessee State Guard.

She began growing out her hair in the 1980s, after watching ‘Til Tuesday’s music video for its song, “Voices Carry.”

In that video, the singer defends her hair and looks after her boyfriend makes disparaging comments.

“The girl had a rattail, and I really wanted one of those,” Manis, 58, recounted.

But when she went to a local barber in November 1989, the hairdresser told her the style did not suit her, and she decided to chop it off.

However, Manis immediately regretted the decision and started to grow it out once more on February 9, 1990 – which she now considers her ’s birthday. She has not cut it since.

The style has since become almost synonymous with Manis, with the nurse saying that people remember her specifically because of her unique do.

“The weirdest thing I find is that people remember me from years ago,” she told Guinness. “I’ve had people recognize me from 20 years ago because I’ve kept the same hairstyle.”

The mullet has also become a conversation starter among her friends and family, she said, noting that — true to form — most people don’t notice how long her hair is until she turns around.

Manis attributes her luxurious locks to good genetics.

But in order to keep it up, she washes her hair with Hask hair care products, including a conditioner with Argan oil in it and another leave-in conditioner.

Once she is done shampooing and conditioning, Manis says she dries her hair with paper towels so that it doesn’t stay wet.

Her friend would then come over to braid her hair for her once a week so that she doesn’t trip over it, and Manis said it will stay in that style until the next time it is washed.

“Most of the time people around me know that it’s braided, and it’s still very impressive at that point,” she said.

Manis has tried to earn awards for her signature look in the past, competing in the “Femullet” division of the 2022 US Mullet Championships last year. The competition is the largest of its kind in the , with more than 1,000 applicants participating each year.

Unfortunately, Manis only took home the second-place prize of $300, losing out to Alexa Lindsey of Holland, Michigan, who earned the top prize of $500.

But soon after, Guinness announced that it was opening up the “longest competitive mullet” as a Records prize, and she felt encouraged to apply.

After having several discussions with a representative from the company, a photographer met her at her Knoxville home while a videographer recorded a judge measuring the length of her hair.

She said she only found out she had won when she received a package at her door with an official Guinness World Records certificate.

“I confirmed it with the gentleman from Guinness World Records and then I reverified that I’m actually in the 2024 edition of Guinness World Records for the longest mullet and that is pretty amazing!” Manis said.
