Why did World War I start? | Causes and combatants | WION Originals

Published

on

World War I occurred between July 1914 and November 11, 1918. By the end of the war, over 17 million people were killed. The reason why war erupted is actually much more complicated than a simple list of causes.

A lot bullshit here…In WW1 there was no « Axis » which term was coined by Mussolini in his wish to wish to bring Italy closer to Germany…
Hitler felt the same because Musso assured him he would not oppose Hitler’s move over Austria …which was a radical change of attitude to the events of four years before when his friend Dollfuss had been assassinated by Austrian Hitlerite Nazis and Mussolini had moved troops upto the Brenner Pass to prevent a Nazi take-over. Since then, Mussolini had aggressed a member state of the League of Nations having observed that in some years before Japan had done something very similar invading Manchuria and that the League had done nothing more than condemning the aggression. Italy out in the cold had few friends except that Nazi Germany didn’t join other League members in the restrictions by the League although these were of little consequence, Suez Canal remained open to Italian troop ships going to Abyssinia and there was no embargo on oil companies trading with Italy. Mussolini’s attitude towards Dollfuss’s successor was less intense, in fact luke warm even indifferent. Mussolini proved himself a coward and of shallow character when it came to effecting anything worthy of moral purpose. This document needs much more reflection and honest thought than at present.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗜𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱
The war in Ukraine is unlike any war that’s been. Although it seems local, this war is changing the world. In the end, after all the pain, the parties will establish new relationships, and new relationships will be established around the world. This war is the beginning of a formation of a new world order, where all parties unite against the one common enemy of all of humanity: egoism. It will take time, but everyone involved will realize, and the whole world with them, that they are not fighting against each other, but against an enemy within them. If we let the idea sink in, even a bit, it will make it happen even sooner.
The war that began in late February will not end soon. It will take many more months until everyone realizes that war itself, the very concept of it, is evil. In that sense, the war in eastern Europe is correcting all of humanity, transforming our perception and our understanding of good and evil.
The casualties, the injured, and the lost property are a terrible price to pay. Nevertheless, global processes always come at a cost. We should not blame others for the cost, and we should not think that there is nothing each of us can do to change the world. It is in the hands of every person to change the world for the better, and to make the atrocities of war, and all atrocities that humans are inflicting on each other, disappear. All we need is to realize that the only enemy lies within us—our self-centered attitude. It incites us against each other, demonizes and vilifies anyone who disagrees with us, tells us that we are the only ones entitled in this world, and thereby sets us off against each other. We are all like that, infected with a pandemic of narcissism.
Nevertheless, there is a lot we can do to change the world. First, we must accept that there is a good reason we are so different from each other. Each of us makes a unique contribution to the world that no one else can. If we were all the same, the contributions we receive from others, and on which our lives depend, would be absent, and we would not survive, in the most physical sense of the word.
We will realize that our ego is the enemy only when we realize that singularity is the wrong key word for happiness. Today, the key word for happiness is complementarity—mutual satisfaction of each other’s material, social, emotional, and spiritual needs.
We are living in a world where we are all dependent on each other. The food we eat, the clothes we wear, and the appliances and gadgets that we use are all made by people we do not know, in places we do not know, and reach us in ways we do not know. But were it not for this chain of myriad unknown individuals, we would not survive, since we cannot provide for our needs by ourselves.
The same goes for social ties. All our connections, communications, and interactions with other people are made possible with the help of countless people who serve us without our awareness. But were it not for them, we would not be able to work or socialize.
Despite this obvious fact, we behave toward others with as little consideration as possible, and when we are nice or considerate, it is because we have an ulterior, selfish motive. We do not have the prerogative to keep up this behavior. We are destroying the world and destroying ourselves.
Back in the 1930s, Baal HaSulam, a great thinker and a great kabbalist, wrote an epic essay titled “Peace in the World.” In it, he writes, “Man is inherently born to lead a social life. Each and every individual in society is like a wheel that is linked to several other wheels placed in a machine.” How odd it is that ninety years ago, before World War II, people already realized that we are all dependent on each other and must behave toward each other with consideration. Just think what we could have avoided had we been more attentive and open-minded.
Now, too, we are headed for a catastrophe unless we pay attention and begin to act like one entity, one global society that works like a single, united family. The war will change the world, but I hope we can change ourselves before the war changes us.

There is one very important point, that has to do with our todays world and was a key factor, a concept, how it came to the I. World War and that did not got mentioned in the video. The leadership of Austria-Hungary was thinking, Russia will not really willing to start a war against Austria-Hungary just because Serbia got attacked. So, they played a risky game with attacking Serbia. They were wrong – Russia was really ready to go to war. Germany thought, France and Great Britain will not really want to go to war, just to keep their alliance with Russia. They were wrong – France and G.B. went to war ! And so on…. And the start of the II. World War was very similar. Germany played a risky game. They thought, France and G. Britain will not really go to war just to defend Poland. But, they were wrong. Big mistakes. And today, this is the same, how World War III will begin (the prequel has already started). The USA and with the most western countries think, they can provoke and hurt Russia more and more and Russia will not do anything. They are wrong and they will be more wrong soon and the whole world will pay a big price for this stupid and irresponsible mistake.

"The world was divided into two forces" – That is the result of the war, not a cause. You make it sound as if there was some uniting factor determining who was on which side while in reality this was completely transactional and circumstantial.

  29. @michaelutech4786

    March 15, 2024 at 3:20 pm

"Russia was in charge of Allied forces" – What? Russia was one party to the war. They were by no means in charge of the Allies. France, England and Russia were the main actors on the side of the Allies, but each of them had their own agenda and acted quite independently in coordination.

    So to sum it up.
World War I was basically a person get bullied by two bullies for assassinate their bro then the friend of bullies joined in like JoJo scene became three bullying one. But, then the bullied got a good friend come to his rescue but alone he isn't capable of stopping the bullies. Thus, his best friend came to help him to rescue his bullied friend.

This is a kinder garden version of events.

The reality is much more complex than both the conventoinal wisdom that Germany was a militaristic aggressor and this fairytale here.

Engand, France, Germany and Russia were always competitors and have a lot of history of wars with constantly shifting alliances. Before WW1, a lot of things changed. Germany mostly won its generational conflict with France that started with the Napoleonic wars (it actually was born out of a conglomerate of weakly associated mini-states condensing around the relative power houses Prussia and Austria). At that point, Germany had a strong network of Alliances that isolated France, which was weakened by its last emperor. England was the sole naval global force, which limitted both Russian and German colonial interests. Germany was the only European major power that had no colonies. This network of conflicts was not easily resolvable in political terms, so the whole continent and England was expecting or even longing for a resolution. At the same time, there were major technological advances that were about to revolutionise both the economy and military. All that put together created a now-or-never atmosphere. In parallel to this large scale tension, each European power had a variety of local or minor conflicts, one of which was Austrias tension with its own empire and Serbia. There was always some war to take revenge for or some damage to seek compensation for.

Then Ferdinand was assassinated and Germany made the mistake to give Austria a public endorsement, giving Austria the (in hindsight) false impression to be in a strong position to put pressure on Serbia.

During the time between Austria's ultimatum and the start of the war, there were a lot of attempts to negotiate a peaceful solution, it's very fascinating to read the correspondence between the German and Russian emperors, the diplomatic correspondence between German diplomates and their french counterparts and the position between English royalty, English politicians and colonial English business entities is a very interesting thing to learn about.

In summary, people were excited to get all these complexities resolved and everybody believed that one more war would resolve this once and for all. You see that in politics, economy and on the streets, with different motivations, from different perspectives and with different goals in countries involved. But that's really very much the thing, people wanted this war.

There were many opportunities to stop the war, nobody really cared much about Austria and Serbia. That was just some obscure conflict that in comparison to how the whole world was to be distributed and who would dominate Europe and thus the world on the technological side.

The USA who would ultimately inherit this world dominance after the first and then second world war was not really involved. They had no local competition and did not depend much on colonies because of their local resources and opportunities in Asia and South America.

Some of what I wrote is not precise or oversimplified, but I find it shameful that an organisation like WION cannot come up with more substance than "X liked Y, Y is friends with Z" and stuff like that. My pre-teen kids would not be satisfied with explanations on that level. This is embarrassing.
