China in, ‘India out’ in Maldives? | Inside South Asia

Published

on

A power shift in the Maldives with pro-China Mohamed Muizzu taking over as President means a massive shift in the Maldives-India relationship. Muizzu has already said he would adopt a pro-China stance and work to evict what he called ‘foreign troops’ from the Maldives. India watches with concern as Chinese influence rises in the Indian Ocean Region – in Sri Lanka, Nepal and now the Maldives.

India maintains a military presence of 75 troops who are engineers and technicians. These Indian troops maintain and operate one helicopter and a ship protecting special economic zone of maldives in the sea. why India does it: its a strategic military location to stop chinese expansion. china may dig up a new island and cliam it as chinese territory or invade some of the maldivis islands. why maldives need indians: Indians help secure its seas and Indians are a major source of revenue for maldives through tourism. Maldives can choose to tilt towards china and lose indian support in military and tourism. Dont think chinese will ever be able make up for the lost number of indian tourists unless chinese citizen are forced by CCP to visit maldives which is still unsustainable in the long run. Also India should allow maldives to welcome china and withdraw completely with troops and helicopter and the ship. let them be with chinese and in the mean time plan for a good punishment when they beg india to come back. Note: maldives economy is at the brink of collapse anyway. chinese loan debt trap will be the final nail in the coffin. srilanka, pakistan, nepal, bangladesh and many countries in south asia recently had a rude awakening on chinese debt trap, let maldives be the next one.😂😂

The Chinese are clean. They don't smell of last week's dinner as they walk past in the street. Similarly the Maldivians were also known throughout history and even at present, as a clean and orderly people. That is another drawcard in Beijing and Male's favour. This is definitely a minus for Delhi.

Since when did India become the Maldives' "traditional partner"? India became a single country ruling over its own territory only in 1947. Your country is a relative newcomer in the Maldives' backyard. Even after that, for at least a decade and a half, France, Oman and Portugal had colonies in India- in the case of Oman, in what is now Pakistan. The Maldives had governed itself as a single entity, ruled over by their own kings for centuries before and after that. According to historical records and archaeological evidence, the Maldives had direct contact with China over those centuries. When other countries began opening embassies in the Maldives, it was China (Taiwan) that opened its embassy in Male. Israel was the first country to send its (non-resident) ambassador to Male. You guys were nowhere to be seen. "Traditional partner", my word!

An Indian, @avatardailyfitnessjournal, who has posted below writes, "at a population of 500 thousand, maldives should not even be a country." This is precisely India's official position too. This is why Maldivians are justifiably angry and chanting "INDIA OUT". Absolutely no Chinese are this disrespectful towards the people of the Maldives.

  14. @Christian_Paul_nz

    February 28, 2024 at 6:28 am

Indians never regarded the Maldives as sovereign equals. Instead, even today, India regards these islanders as uncouth, low-caste, INDIAN fishermen who have accidentally become prosperous because of tourism. However, India still regards Maldivians as low-cast, untouchable sudras शूद्र and dalits दलितों. China, on the other hand, respected Maldivians as sovereign equals from ancient times.

A Chinese record from the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD) documents a Maldives delegation that visited China in order to take gifts from King Baladitiya to Emperor Kao-Tsung in 658 AD and again in 662 AD. In this document, the Maldive Islands are referred to as “Mo-lai”.

According to Chinese archives, in the fourteenth year of the Ming Emperor Yongle, which was the seventh year of the second reign of the Hilaaly dynasty King Yusuf (AD 1417), the Maldives king sent an ambassador to the court the Emperor in Nanjing. The Chinese capital was moved to Beijing five years later.

In the 10th year of the Emperor Yongle and the 5th year of Xuande of the Ming Dynasty, the merchant fleet led by Admiral Zheng He arrived in the Maldives twice. This was also in the reign of King Yusuf.

In the book "Foreign Splendours" by Ma Huan in Zheng He's entourage and the book "Maritime Marvels" by Fei Xin, there are detailed accounts of the geographical location, weather condition, local produce, mode of life and customs of the Maldives. The Chinese referred to the Maldives as "Liushan", which has now changed to "Ma-erdìfu" 馬爾地夫.

From the point of view of Maldivians, India, is a hostile, unfriendly, foreign country. INDIA must leave the islands to Maldivians and stay OUT. If Maldivians want to be friends of China, that is a decision that must be left to the Maldivians. These islanders are also friendly with Europeans, Japanese, southeast Asians, Australians and Americans.

Very good timely smart decision by the people of Maldives to elect such a president who is eager to derisking from India’s evil intentions. Presence of 75 Indian military personnel is more enough to destabilize and even destroy Maldives entities as a sovereign country. One paper it would look like sovereign but underneath the surface India is in control over their security which is very very risky. The other India’s neighboring countries feel the same heat like Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Sikkim, and many more

US Plans $725 Million Payment Toward UN Regular Budget | WORLD DNA

Published

on

By

The United States has notified Congress of its intent to disburse a $725 million payment toward the United Nations regular budget. While aid experts note this financial injection will help the cash-strapped global body “keep the ship afloat” amid an severe funding crisis, it covers less than 20% of the multi-billion dollar debt Washington reportedly owes. U.S. officials emphasize that the funds remain contingent on continued structural reforms and cost-cutting mandates within the organization.
