We have wanted to dig in to a mascara since the early days of The Makeup Breakup but struggled with how we would accurately measure the contents. We still haven’t found the perfect method but we did find a mascara that would make it a little easier to give you a visual representation of what’s inside, the Eyeko London Skinny Brush Mascara!

Hey gorgeous ladies, with the solid plastic tubes for other mascaras, I just take out the stopper and scrape all the product out. I even use the wand to scrape all the edges out. X

Maybe figure out the density at some point? Measure out 1 mL (or whatever your smallest unit is) and figure out how many g/mL. Use that to back track the volume from the mass.

The 3 month rule is just a way to sell more mascara. Once when I couldn’t tell the difference between an old and new tube, I weighed them and found that I had only used 2 grams of the ‘old’ tube. So now when I have two ‘old’ tubes that I can’t seem to get more out of, I cut one in half with garden shears and scrape those contents in to the other tube (I use a stainless steel staple remover but a thin knife would probably work too). You can repeat this process for a long time and probably won’t need to buy mascara more than once a year. I was just sick of paying $40 for a product that I was only able to use 2 grams of. Never had an infection and even if you did, conjunctivitis once every 10 years would likely save about $1000 over that time!

Get any sort of mascara, add 10 ml os water mix, mesure, you get the volume plus 10 exta mils, now subtract the 10 ml. Here you go the actual amount of product

To get the volume of things like this, you need to put a specific amount of water in a beaker then drop the stuff in the water and the added amount is the volume! My grandma uses this with cooking

Have you considered, and I understand if there is a safety element, some cutters to cut the top or end off and use one of those little spatulas to scrape out the product? Would only really work with a round smooth tube, as the odd shaped ones would be too difficult and might be too dangerous. Some garden shears meant for pruning bushes (round branches) might work. A pair of cutters for PVC pipe would be perfect! Very safe and effective as they are meant to cut evenly around a hard plastic pipe and leave a smooth edge. Now I kinda want to try it on a cheap mascara myself!

I’ve had one of these eyeko mascaras for like over 2 years 🤪 i don’t use it anymore but it’s still moist and doesn’t smell or anything.

This is super helpful, thanks for this video! I have to wipe off my mascara wand before applying it because my lashes are so fine. I was always so worried that I was wasting too much product and just throwing away money because there musn't be much product in those tubes. It was nice to see how wrong I was for that silly worry.

To test mascara take cheap fake lashes glue them on a styrofoam ball and do about 20 coats on each pair until you use the whole tube.

Next time you guys need to do volume measurements on something gloopy and gloppy, have you ever considered doing volume displacement? You fill a beaker/graduated cylinder/etc partway up with water (or some other liquid as long as it won't dissolve too much of the product), then add the new material into the water and see how much higher the water level goes. For something like this, especially, that came out in a big chunk, I think it'd work decently well! Maybe less so with some of the really liquidy products like liquid lipsticks.
Either way, the visual of all that mascara on the paper towel says a LOT.

What if you warm the product up and then use hot water to rinse a mascara tube? You could measure the amount of water you use? I dunno. Haha

Something you could do next time if a thick product is measured in ml is make it into a solution, so add it to say 50ml or a measured amount of water or oil, depending on the product, and see how many ml you end up with. Or work out the mass that should be in there using the density of the product, although I have no idea if the density of mascara is out there anywhere! Regardless, another great video 🙂

I’m a big fan of travel size mascaras and I find that even with every day use they can last up to 4-6 months which is great because I wouldn’t want to use one for longer than that

No way I'm buying a new mascara every 3 months. Urban Decay Cannonball is way to expensive for that. I use up mine in about 7/8 months or so, every day use. Never applying mascara over yesterdays makeup, always takes off my makeup properly. Never got an eye infection or whatever. Actually my lashes has been growing longer since I started using the UD mascara! And ppl tell me not to use waterproof mascara bc it's damaging the eyelashes more, as long as I take it off properly I don't see a problem. Especially since I cant use regular…

I wonder if you could do some sort of “how many swatches” by dipping and wiping the brush on a paper towel. Would take forever though clearly 🤔

I bought a ton of mascara wands on Amazon so I use one every time I apply make up so my mascara isn't gross or anything 🙂

I’m 18 and I have mascara that I have had since I was 14 or younger and it works just fine for me I feel like if you don’t lend out your makeup to random people it’ll be fine I have never had an eye problem so 🤷🏻♀️ oh well I guess

I have one of these….it actually says use within 6 months of opening on it instead of 3…..I still don't use it enough to come close to using that massive amount of product

Do people not use mascara everyday?” Oh it’s a lot of product” “omg that’s so much” are all of you guys saying that, one coaters every couple of days and done? Wtf. I use mascara pretty much everyday and I do more than one coat. There should be a good amount of product, especially for the price point.
