A degree isn't a mark of knowledge. It's acknowledgement you can sit in a room, pay attention, and repeat back what you're told. It's also acknowledgement you can look up and find the information you need to answer questions. It's purely an indicator you can take a task, understand it, and generate a product against a set of floating standards and requirements. Getting a degree isn't an indicator of knowledge or intelligence…it's just another qualification check box…

Mike needs to check into these 2 year trade programs. They are popping up all over but some have extremely un-qualified people teaching them. They now have a quicker and easier way to take your money. The trade’s collapse is real and will happen.

This could have been a really great video if that guy in the end didn't try to make it about Biden. What Rowe was talking about has been happening for decades and blaming one single person is in it self dumb and it also distances us from finding a solution.

I will stand by this till the day I die. Getting a College degree was the biggest mistake of my life. In debt, took forever, wasted my time, Still don’t have a Job related to it cause idk wtf all these companies want. They want someone with 50+ years of experience for an entry level job. My current Job has people that either dropped out of school, OR have a masters. So how does that make any sense. I have a Bachelors and I have coworkers WITH A MASTER. So if they can’t make it in this world with a MASTERS then what chance do I have. EDUCATION AFTER HIGH SCHOOL IS USELESS in this day and age. And I will die on this Hill. Even if I am alone on this.

I agree with what Mike has stated, but one of the biggest problems with shortages in the trades is, the baby boomers had those jobs completely filled up until about 15 years ago. I was 19 in 1985, you couldn’t get into the locals back then, took another 8 years of doing a lot of different jobs, and technical colleges started becoming more accessible. I got in, became an electrician, and never looked back. My point is you have at least one generation that lost out on the trade apprenticeship programs. It’s a lot harder to go the route I did.

If you wanna know how worthless the universities are, look no further than the mass Pro-terrorist “protests” we’ve had this last year.

One point of correction.. Yes UK degrees are 3 years BUT, we begin our first year degree courses in high school at age 16.. yes we graduate HS at 16, then do calculus etc between 16 and 18. When I was getting my UK degree accredited in the US I was given credit for those two years (16 to 18) as part of the US equivalent of a 4 year US degree. So yes, only a 3 year degree, but we start 2 years earlier.

European view of Higher ed is.. If you want to be an engineer.. Get a bachelors in Engineering. You want to be an MD.. you go study medicine. There is no other reason to go to University…NONE! This American idea of the college experience then go find yourself is a bunch of expensive BS! Disclaimer.. I'm an engineer and have had a fabulous 40 year career, but then my degree was cheap and from the UK. Today I would be a welder!

Unmitigated hogwash! College degrees are not being looked down upon by anyone. Who wanted to be a plumber and unclog sh!t all damned day? No thanks! I'll take a think'n man's job and pay for the HVAC'r to keep cool and comfortable as I make the deals.

College is absolutely a privilege; like they said in the video, "a degree that you purchase." Instead of making college free, we should be making trade schools and vocational schools free for people who actually want a job. 1/10th the cost of a college tuition and will help fulfill the jobs that are actually needed this day and age while providing a 6 figure salary to those that take it seriously.

Just look at what you're paying for. In a 4 year degree only the last 3 semesters are spent taking classes that are relevant to your degree. Cut the fluff and even the ridiculous prices become bearable. Most college degrees should just be a 6-18 month certificate.

The two men alongside Mike Rowe are absolute doofuses on this topic. One says Covid was the breakdown of higher ed, and the other cites Biden’s proposed Student Debt Forgiveness Plan – are you kidding me?! They think this is a 2020+ problem?! That level of delusion is utterly gobsmacking to me

I personally believe that if you dont have a strong work ethic, a degree will not help you. The real work doesn't happen while going to college. It begins after. Shortcuts are in low supply. You typically have to put in the time to see the fruit.

a degree use to be buying knowledge or wisdom now anyone with an iphone has just as much knowledge and can solve any solution as someone with a doctorate.

You gotta pay to play. If you’re gonna play, then the more knowledge you have the better off you’re going to be. Work the tradeschool if you have to and do something better if you want to, or need to.

As someone who didn't go to college, i always wondered why so many people are stuck with massive college debt. My friend got a full ride for his batchelors and is about to get a full ride for law school. Do people just not look hard enough for scholarships? Because he's just some average nobody.

College is now for entry to the Bureaucrat professions. There are two paths. The job that creates the taxes and the job that is funded by taxes or the Bureaucrat

    College definitely isn’t for everyone.
I’ve worked in the trades since high school and now I’m making 6 figures in my mid 20s
