I think Sheffield United have put this formation and the 2 left and right centre backs overlapping the wing backs at times, I think if they gave van Gaal more time he would have one them the league by now I mean signed the likes of Diego Maria Falcoa depay, they actually had a really good team just needed time to grow but typical united fans weren't patient for a title

Just goes to show you how much the game has changed in the space of a few years. Back when Jamie was making his point he only had a few of these so called modern fullbacks to use as examples, whereas if you look at the game now, for most teams the main objective for a fullback is to get forward. Look at Trent Alexander-Arnold, he’s regarded to be the best fullback in the league and arguably the best in the world, but definitely the best young fullback in the world, yet if you watch him this season and last season, time and time again he’ll get caught out defensively yet he’s still one of the best fullbacks in the world. Why? Because his attacking ability is almost unmatched by any other fullback in the world. At the time Neville’s point definitely made a lot more sense but you could still argue for both sides, whereas if you look at the game now Carragher’s point makes more sense

Carra is wrong a full back yes goes forward and will help out if the play at that time allows
But a wing back has to attack he is effectively a winger and a left or right back when the attach happens playing a wing back system you will often see the right wing back crossing them ball and the left wing back scoring where yes full backs get forward but they are not expected to be the crosser for most attacks there not expected to be at the back post ready to receive a cross
To say both have the same job is wrong they are called different names for a reason

Jamie is spot on here, andy robertson and trent alex-A for example, Liverpools full backs are constantly used to whip crosses in but they're not wingbacks.

"Wing backs have to be good an both ends of the pitch. They are specialist positions". A hindsight foreshadowing of a Mourinho to United?

Neville's right. Outside CB's in a back three need have have qualities of a CB and a RB/LB merged in one, so they're comfortable receiving/defending the ball in wide areas as well as defending the penalty box. Wing backs need to have qualities of a full back and a winger merged in one so they can attack and defend in the wide areas, not to mention the fact that they need to have exceptional stamina. That's why these are specialist positions.

Looking at it now , after Conte won the league with breakthrough success in wingbacks with Chelsea and the wide use of 3 at the back formation in the prem now , Carra wasn't correct at all , azpi couldn't play wingback well , same was Alonso cannot play as a LB . The point being it defers from player to player and what team and system the player has played and been accustomed to .
