If you are too stupid to realize that losing steel production in the U.S is a major threat to national security, you are too dumb to be on the air. Period.

High grade steel comes from the Dutch, owned by an Indian company, or Sweden. Nippon Steel already goes into those big cranes you see on top of sky scrappers (6” thick steel plate). NLMK is owned by a… wait for it… a RUSSIAN company. Who cares? Good for Nippon for having that much cash laying around.

Last I checked Japan is an ally. We still have independent companies? We’ve sold out to China haven’t we? I trust Japan before I would ever trust China. That being said, we have too much greed in our country and that will be our downfall. Well, one of many downfalls.

The fly in the ointment is will China invade Taiwan. Will the U.S. under Biden support Taiwan, because I personally believe he won't. Biden has been bought off. So, Japan may want a secure source of steel, if they are the only country supporting Taiwan. Something they wouldn't have if they didn't control U.S. Steel.

Trouble with US politicians is that they are a one trick pony. The only trick they know is tariffs. When US increases tariffs, the price of goods go up and consumes pay more. Instead, they ought to be increasing productivity. The reason that manufacturing jobs have left the country is because US factories are less productive relative to the operating costs. There's nothing wrong with paying workers higher wages. The companies/factories must invest in equipments, technologies, automation etc to gain productivity to offset the costs.

Steel is a fundamental strategic resource. I didn't realize that Nippon Steel had a history of that nature. Maybe I should look into this more closely.
My understanding was that they were going to keep the same plants and the same employees – is that not true?
