Graeme Souness speaks of ‘deep regrets’ as Liverpool manager in emotional reflection | MNF Q&A

Graeme Souness spoke candidly about his Liverpool regrets during his appearance on Monday Night Football.

Souness won five league titles and three European Cups as a player with Liverpool, and then managed them between 1991 and 1994.

Despite winning the FA Cup in 1992, Liverpool’s dominance of English football was fading, and the Sky Sports pundit admits he tried to change the culture of the club too fast.

In a must-read account of his time at Anfield, Souness opens up about his biggest regrets, and why certain perceptions of him still hurt him badly.

Always be remembered as being one of our top players. What happened as a manager, for me personally, means nothing. He made us invincible. All the best, Souey!

LFC;s most successful years coincided with Graeme as player and captain – 12 major trophies in six years when the League Cup meant something, culminating in a treble in 1984. The club has struggled to emulate that ever since.
For that reason I place him as one of if not the greatest Liverpool player. Ian Rush said that going out onto the pitch with Graeme in your team gave you an immediate psychological advantage. The opposition just didn't want to know.
Oh for a player like that again at Liverpool today!

To me he was the best midfielder ever for Liverpool he was ruthless and you just wouldn’t want to be on the opposite side he played like it was his last game, but as a coach for Liverpool he was very very poor but love him

Love Souness, can still remember as a 9 year old crying the day he left Rangers, absolutely heartbroken that he could leave our club and didn't think I'd ever forgive him but of course the pull of Liverpool was too much and as I grew up and learned of the way he was being forced out by the SFA and that he turned Liverpool down twice before, it became easy to forgive him especially since Walter Smith done such a great job for us and that Souness always says he regrets leaving Rangers and that there was no bigger club….

He may have not succeeded in the way he hoped or the Liverpool fans hoped or expected as manager but as he says and from what I've heard from ex players he definitely tried his best and it was just the worst possible time for him to be manager, coming off the huge success of the 80s and into a transition period for the club… he may have his critics as a manager especially later on but he revolutionised Scottish football and won cups with Liverpool, Blackburn and Galatasaray and who can forget that Flag incident in Turkey, what an absolute legend!!

As a player there is no argument, he was an icon, won everything there is to win including 3 cups with the big ears and in an era where Liverpool have only managed 1 title in 30 years he managed to scoop 5 of them, he went to Serie A when that league was the pinnacle, captained his country, played at 3 world cups and is up there as one of the best Scottish players of all time and one of the best the UK has produced full stop… so glad he still on our screens as well, love listening to him
