When politicians talk about numbers related to budgets and deficits, our eyes glaze over and we cant quite comprehend the actual size of these big numbers. The late great Senator Everett Dirksen (R-IL) so famously observed, "A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money." Well there sure is a lot of real taxpayer money being thrown around these days in an effort to stop the U.S. economy from crashing.
Just to show the relative size of these big numbers, I took a micrometer to measure the thickness of a ten dollar bill at 0.0045" or four and half thousandths of an inch (All bills are the same thickness).
One million dollars in thousand dollar bills would fit in a blue collar workers lunch box with room for a decent sized lunch. It would be a stack FOUR AND ONE HALF INCHES TALL!
ONE BILLION DOLLARS in $1,000 bills would be 375 feet tall; 70 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty including the base.
ONE TRILLION DOLLARS would be a THOUSAND 375 foot stacks of thousand dollar bills.
