WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A CV? 01:48
7 CV & RESUME MISTAKES YOU MUST AVOID! 02:45
10 BEST WORDS FOR CVS & RESUMES 05:00
CV TEMPLATE 09:36
How to Write a CV or Resume That Gets Interviews in 2026
Your CV or resume is one of the most important documents you will ever create. It is your opportunity to convince a hiring manager that you have the skills, knowledge, qualifications, and experience needed to succeed in the role.
The purpose of a CV is simple: to demonstrate that you match the job description better than the other applicants. If your CV clearly shows that you have what the employer is looking for, you dramatically increase your chances of being invited to interview.
1. Spelling and Grammar Mistakes
Even one spelling or punctuation mistake can create a poor first impression. Always proofread your CV several times and ask someone else to review it before sending it.
2. Ignoring Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
Many employers now use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter applications before a human ever reads them. Your CV should use a clean layout, standard headings, and simple formatting that ATS software can easily process.
3. Sending the Same CV for Every Job
Never use a generic CV. Every application should be tailored specifically to the position you are applying for by matching your experience, skills, and achievements to the job description.
4. Not Using Keywords
Recruiters and ATS software actively search for keywords taken directly from the job advert. Include relevant industry terms, technical skills, qualifications, and responsibilities throughout your CV wherever they naturally apply.
5. Writing a Weak Professional Summary
Your professional summary sits at the very top of your CV and is often the first section employers read. It should clearly explain who you are, what you offer, and why you are a strong candidate.
6. Making Your CV Too Long
Hiring managers spend only seconds scanning most applications. Aim for a concise, well-organised CV of no more than two or three pages.
7. Using an Unprofessional Email Address
Your email address should present you professionally. Ideally, use your name rather than nicknames or informal usernames.
The Best Action Verbs for Your CV
Strong action verbs instantly make your achievements more impressive. Instead of simply listing duties, demonstrate the impact you made.
Some of the most powerful action verbs include:
* Achieved
* Implemented
* Resolved
* Increased
* Generated
* Led
* Optimised
* Spearheaded
* Developed
* Streamlined
Whenever possible, support these words with measurable results. For example, instead of saying you “improved customer service,” write that you “Resolved 95% of customer complaints during first contact” or “Increased customer satisfaction scores by 30%.”
Numbers make your achievements more credible and memorable.
The 6 Essential Sections Every CV Should Include
(A professional CV should contain six key sections.)
Personal Details
Include your full name, phone number, professional email address, LinkedIn profile (where appropriate), and your location. There is usually no need to include your full home address.
Professional Summary
Write a concise paragraph summarising your experience, achievements, skills, and career strengths while naturally incorporating keywords from the job description.
Work Experience
List your employment in reverse chronological order. Include your job title, employer, employment dates, and several bullet points highlighting responsibilities and achievements. Focus on results rather than simply describing your duties.
Educational Background & Qalifications
Include your qualifications, educational institution, and graduation dates. If you are still studying, simply state “In Progress.”
Technical & Soft Skills
Create a dedicated skills section that combines technical skills with workplace skills.
Examples of technical skills include Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, AI productivity tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, project management methodologies, digital marketing, graphic design, video editing, cloud computing, and IT support.
Important soft skills include communication, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, adaptability, emotional intelligence, customer service, resilience, time management, and decision-making.
Certification and Awards
Professional certifications immediately demonstrate your commitment to continuous learning. Include industry qualifications, workplace certifications, and awards that strengthen your application.

MAGISTRATE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS & ANSWERS! (How to PASS Your Magistrate Interview!)
MAGISTRATE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS & ANSWERS! (How to PASS Your Magistrate Interview!) Learn how to prepare for a magistrate interview with tips, questions and example answers. #magistrate #magistratescourt #jobinterview #interviewquestions
5 TOP TIPS FOR PREPARING FOR A MAGISTRATE INTERVIEW!
If you have been invited to attend a magistrate interview, congratulations! Becoming a magistrate is a rewarding opportunity to serve your local community and play an important role in the justice system. Here are five top tips to help you prepare effectively and increase your chances of success.
TIP 1 – Understand the Role Thoroughly
Before attending your interview, make sure you fully understand what a magistrate does. Research the responsibilities of magistrates, the types of cases they hear, and the commitment required. Interview panels are looking for candidates who genuinely understand the role and are prepared for the responsibilities that come with it.
TIP 2 – Learn the Key Qualities Being Assessed
Magistrates are selected based on specific qualities rather than legal knowledge. During the interview, you will be assessed on attributes such as good character, communication skills, social awareness, sound judgement, maturity, reliability, and commitment.
Think about examples from your work, voluntary activities, community involvement, or personal life where you have demonstrated these qualities.
TIP 3 – Prepare for Behavioural Questions
Many magistrate interview questions focus on your past behaviour. The panel wants evidence that you can make balanced decisions, remain impartial, and deal with people fairly.
Common questions include:
* Tell us about a time you made a difficult decision.
* Describe a situation where you remained impartial.
* Tell us about a time you resolved conflict.
* Give an example of when you considered different viewpoints before reaching a conclusion.
Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers. This approach helps you provide clear, concise, and evidence-based responses.
TIP 4 – Demonstrate Fairness and Impartiality
One of the most important qualities of a magistrate is the ability to remain objective. Throughout the interview, show that you are willing to listen carefully, consider all perspectives, and make decisions based on facts rather than personal opinions or emotions.
When discussing examples, explain how you gathered information, remained open-minded, and reached a fair outcome. The panel will be looking for evidence that you can make balanced judgements even in challenging situations.
TIP 5 – Show a Genuine Desire to Serve the Community
Finally, be prepared to explain why you want to become a magistrate. Strong candidates demonstrate a genuine commitment to public service and a desire to make a positive contribution to society.
Talk about your interest in fairness, justice, and community involvement. Explain how your experiences, skills, and personal qualities would help you serve effectively as a magistrate and contribute positively to the justice system.

"Why is it important to promote diversity within the police force?"
My answer to this question would use a quote by Sir Robert Peel, who founded the Metropolitan Police Service. He said "The police are the public and the public are the police".
I would explain that the United Kingdom has a very diverse society, with people from a wide range of backgrounds, and that this should be reflected in the composition of the police. When Sir Robert Peel said what I have quoted him saying above, he was referring to it not being a case of "us vs them" in relation to the police and the public.
I think this is a good quote to use, because it demonstrates to the interview panel that you've done your research.
@petercdowney
March 12, 2024 at 11:02 am
Points to remember:
– Police officers are expected to do shift work – it is not a 9 to 5 job. Make sure you mention any relevant experience.
– There is a risk that you will be assaulted. Police officers have the same right not to be assaulted when they go to work as everyone else (and courts also take a dim view of those who assault police officers), but it is a possibility that you must be prepared for.
– It is not a police officer's job to beat anyone up – in fact, a good day for a police officer is when they don't have to use force!
– The terms "policeman" and "policewoman" have fallen out of favour, in favour of the gender-neutral term "police officer". The term "police service" is also considered preferable to "police force".
As with all jobs, you will need to be able to demonstrate to the interviewer that you have done your research beforehand. Many police officers here in Britain resign from the service shortly after joining due to not knowing what to expect.

@CareerVidz Hi friend! I just want to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU as I got the job working for the Police.
This is my first job in the Police after working for the NHS for several years, and wanted a career change and have ALWAYS wanted to work for the Police. I did NOT think I would get the job as I have NEVER worked for the Police before. But truly I learnt they just want to see your skill-set and experience, and how you would handle situations and scenarios, not to catch you out (or else, why would they be hiring in the first place. Therefore, they need you to do well).
They told me my application form and my Interview was one of the best they have seen in a very long time, and they said I gave absolutely brilliant examples from my previous work experience in the Interview which also tied in with the current job role. They liked that I kept the examples relevant to the job description.
I am so very grateful to you for your videos and I am so very proud of myself for getting the job. I am a very proud public servant!!! I love serving the public and society as a whole. From the NHS to now the Police, I am truly in awe I get to work to not only change lives, but save lives too. THANK YOU once again from the bottom of my ever so grateful heart. God bless you!!!
