“What Are Your Salary Expectations?” BEST ANSWER!

*** RICHARD MCMUNN’S RULE STRUCTURE FOR ANSWERING: “What Are Your Salary Expectations?” ***
“What are your salary expectations?” is one of the most difficult job interview questions to answer.
Ask for too much, and you risk pricing yourself out of the role. Ask for too little, and you could undervalue yourself and potentially lose thousands of dollars over the course of your employment.
The good news is there is a simple way to give a confident, professional and well-researched response.
I recommend using my R-U-L-E structure.
WHAT IS THE R-U-L-E SALARY EXPECTATIONS STRUCTURE?
R – RESEARCH
U – UNDERSTANDING
L – LIKE
E – EXCEED EXPECTATIONS
Let me explain exactly how to use it.
R – RESEARCH
Before your job interview, research the typical salary range for the position.
Look at the salary advertised in the job description, research similar positions online and use salary comparison websites such as Glassdoor.
Never walk into an interview without knowing approximately what the position is worth.
You can start your answer by saying:
“I researched the salary range for this role and industry before applying.”
This immediately demonstrates preparation and commercial awareness.
U – UNDERSTANDING
Next, tell the hiring manager what you understand the salary range to be.
For example:
“My understanding is that the salary range for this position is between $52,000 and $63,000.”
Giving a range shows that your expectations are based on research rather than simply choosing a figure you would like to earn.
L – LIKE
Now tell the interviewer what salary you would LIKE.
You should be confident, but also realistic. Base your figure on your experience, qualifications, skills and the value you can bring to the organisation.
For example:
“The salary I would like, based on my knowledge, experience and what I can bring to the role, is $62,000, with the opportunity to have this reviewed annually based on my contribution.”
Notice that the figure is towards the upper end of the researched range, but it is still realistic.
E – EXCEED EXPECTATIONS
This is the part most candidates miss.
Don’t just tell the interviewer what you want to earn. Explain what they will get in return for paying you that salary.
For example:
“For $62,000, I will exceed expectations by bringing creative ideas to the team, taking ownership of my professional development, supporting my colleagues and using a commercially focused and frugal approach to help the company achieve its objectives.”
This changes the conversation from “What do you want us to pay you?” to “What value will you give us for that salary?”
BEST ANSWER TO “WHAT ARE YOUR SALARY EXPECTATIONS?”
FINAL TIP FROM RICHARD MCMUNN
When answering “What are your salary expectations?”, never say “I don’t mind”, “Whatever you think is fair”, or give an unrealistic figure without researching the market.
Instead, remember one word:
RULE
Research → Understanding → Like → Exceed Expectations
Research the market, demonstrate your understanding, state what you would like to earn, and then explain how you will exceed expectations in return for that salary.
That’s how you give a confident, professional and persuasive salary expectations answer at your job interview.

RICHARD MCMUNN’S 5 ACTIONABLE TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE INTERVIEW PREPARATION
Job interview preparation is the key to building confidence, reducing nerves, and giving strong answers that convince the hiring manager you are the right person for the role. Here are my 5 actionable interview preparation tips to help you PASS your interview!
TIP 1 – RESEARCH THE COMPANY
Spend at least 30 minutes researching the organisation before your interview. Visit its website and learn about its products and services, values, latest news, and future plans.
Also, check the company’s social media pages for recent developments. This research will help you answer the common interview question, “Why do you want to work for us?” and demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for the role.
TIP 2 – PREPARE ANSWERS TO THE MOST COMMON INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
Don’t leave your answers to chance. Prepare responses to the questions you are most likely to face, including:
Tell me about yourself.
Why do you want this job?
What are your greatest strengths?
What is your biggest weakness?
Why should we hire you?
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Write down your answers and practise saying them aloud until they sound confident and natural. Never memorise your answers word-for-word because this can make you sound scripted.
TIP 3 – PREPARE 4 STRONG STAR EXAMPLES
Most employers ask behavioural interview questions such as, “Tell me about a time you worked under pressure.”
Before your interview, prepare four examples using the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action and Result.
Choose examples that demonstrate important workplace skills, including teamwork, problem-solving, communication, adaptability, and working under pressure. Having these examples prepared will make answering unexpected behavioural questions much easier.
TIP 4 – STUDY THE JOB DESCRIPTION
The job description is effectively a blueprint for your interview. Read it carefully and identify the essential skills, responsibilities, and requirements.
Next to each requirement, write down an example of when you have demonstrated that skill or completed a similar task. This will help you provide evidence that you already have the qualities needed to succeed in the position.
TIP 5 – CONDUCT A MOCK INTERVIEW https://youtu.be/T1vTofBM_uA?si=yDh4G7s5SIrno2QP
One of the best ways to prepare for an interview is to recreate the real experience before the big day.
Ask a friend, family member, or colleague to conduct a mock interview with you. Give them a list of likely questions and ask them to challenge you with follow-up questions.
Better still, record yourself answering questions. Review your body language, eye contact, tone of voice, pace, and clarity. Identify areas for improvement and repeat the process.
The more you practise under realistic interview conditions, the more confident and prepared you will feel.
FINAL TIP: Don’t wait until the night before your interview to start preparing. Follow these five steps several days in advance, and you will significantly improve your chances of delivering a confident, professional, and top-scoring interview performance.
