“What Are Your Salary Expectations?” BEST ANSWER!

How to Answer “What Are Your Salary Expectations?” (BEST ANSWER!) #salaryexpectations #jobinterview #interviewquestionsandanswers https://youtu.be/VUzlCG_eoFs?si=UtCC82T4XmNeqif5

*** RICHARD MCMUNN’S RULE STRUCTURE FOR ANSWERING: “What Are Your Salary Expectations?” ***
“What are your salary expectations?” is one of the most difficult job interview questions to answer.
Ask for too much, and you risk pricing yourself out of the role. Ask for too little, and you could undervalue yourself and potentially lose thousands of dollars over the course of your employment.

The good news is there is a simple way to give a confident, professional and well-researched response.

I recommend using my R-U-L-E structure.
WHAT IS THE R-U-L-E SALARY EXPECTATIONS STRUCTURE?

R – RESEARCH
U – UNDERSTANDING
L – LIKE
E – EXCEED EXPECTATIONS

Let me explain exactly how to use it.

R – RESEARCH
Before your job interview, research the typical salary range for the position.

Look at the salary advertised in the job description, research similar positions online and use salary comparison websites such as Glassdoor.

Never walk into an interview without knowing approximately what the position is worth.

You can start your answer by saying:
“I researched the salary range for this role and industry before applying.”

This immediately demonstrates preparation and commercial awareness.
U – UNDERSTANDING

Next, tell the hiring manager what you understand the salary range to be.

For example:
“My understanding is that the salary range for this position is between $52,000 and $63,000.”

Giving a range shows that your expectations are based on research rather than simply choosing a figure you would like to earn.

L – LIKE
Now tell the interviewer what salary you would LIKE.
You should be confident, but also realistic. Base your figure on your experience, qualifications, skills and the value you can bring to the organisation.

For example:
“The salary I would like, based on my knowledge, experience and what I can bring to the role, is $62,000, with the opportunity to have this reviewed annually based on my contribution.”

Notice that the figure is towards the upper end of the researched range, but it is still realistic.

E – EXCEED EXPECTATIONS
This is the part most candidates miss.

Don’t just tell the interviewer what you want to earn. Explain what they will get in return for paying you that salary.

For example:
“For $62,000, I will exceed expectations by bringing creative ideas to the team, taking ownership of my professional development, supporting my colleagues and using a commercially focused and frugal approach to help the company achieve its objectives.”

This changes the conversation from “What do you want us to pay you?” to “What value will you give us for that salary?”

BEST ANSWER TO “WHAT ARE YOUR SALARY EXPECTATIONS?”

FINAL TIP FROM RICHARD MCMUNN
When answering “What are your salary expectations?”, never say “I don’t mind”, “Whatever you think is fair”, or give an unrealistic figure without researching the market.

Instead, remember one word:
RULE

Research → Understanding → Like → Exceed Expectations

Research the market, demonstrate your understanding, state what you would like to earn, and then explain how you will exceed expectations in return for that salary.

That’s how you give a confident, professional and persuasive salary expectations answer at your job interview.
