In the September 30, 2026, incident aboard FlyDubai Flight FZ1073, Captain Machchhar was seriously injured during an attack in the cockpit but managed to open the cockpit door, allowing crew members and passengers to intervene. The aircraft made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, and everyone on board survived. On October 28, the UAE honoured him and fellow crew members with the First Class Order of Zayed II, recognising their courage and efforts to safeguard passengers. Israel has also announced plans to present him with its Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism after his recovery.

Democrats are on course to regain control of the US House of Representatives, according to projections by US media outlets. The party’s gains in key congressional races could end the Republican majority in the lower chamber. A Democratic-controlled House would give the party greater power to scrutinise President Donald Trump’s administration and challenge his legislative agenda. Vote counting and projections are continuing across several districts.

Jantar Mantar Protest: A large crowd gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Friday for a demonstration against caste-based reservation and demanding reforms to the reservation system. Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force were deployed at the protest site, and several protesters were detained as the demonstration continued.

The protesters, mobilised under the Reservation Hatao Andolan, have called for greater emphasis on economic criteria rather than caste in determining affirmative action and have also raised concerns over UGC rules.

The UK government’s “Be Ready” resilience campaign has inadvertently sparked panic buying and a surge in retail sales for items like toilet paper and emergency hardware across Britain. Authorities emphasize that the guidance is a long-term preparedness strategy for potential disruptions rather than an indicator of an imminent crisis. Under the advisory, Britons were advised to keep three days’ worth of essential supplies, including bottled water, non-perishable food, cash, a torch, spare batteries and a radio, in case essential services are disrupted.

The 2026 US Midterm Elections could reshape the balance of power in the US Senate, with Democrats targeting three key battleground states in an effort to gain seats. The races are drawing national attention as both parties compete for control of Congress. The outcome will play a major role in determining President Donald Trump’s ability to advance his legislative agenda and influence major policy decisions. Official election results will ultimately determine whether Democrats can shift the balance of power in Washington.

US President Donald Trump has vowed to use his presidential veto power if Democrats take control of Congress following the 2026 midterm elections. Trump said he would reject Democratic-backed legislation before eventually negotiating deals with the opposition. He described the veto as a key tool to counter a Democratic-controlled Congress. His remarks signal a potential legislative standoff between the White House and Congress.
