North Korea fires a missile over Japan in a deliberate escalation? | WION Shorts

North Korea has fired a missile over Japan, in what appears to be a deliberate escalation to get the attention of both Japan and the U.S.

The flight distance was about 4,500 km.

Two things stand out:
1. had the missile taken a different trajectory – the distance that the missile travelled was enough to hit the US island of Guam, where America has a military base which clearly puts the U.S. on high alert.
2. It is the first North Korean missile launch over Japan in nearly five years, but this time it prompted a rare warning by the Japanese government for residents in two northern prefectures to seek shelter. Nearly 5 million residents of Hokkaido Japan were warned to take shelter.

This launch represents a major escalation by North Korea, which has conducted a flurry of missile tests in recent days.

In response to the North Korean move, United States held air drills in the region with South Korea.
