Ethiopia is escalating its diplomatic response to Eritrea, announcing plans to close its embassy in Asmara and declaring 10 Eritrean diplomats persona non grata.

The move comes as renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia threatens to undermine the 2022 Pretoria Agreement that ended the Tigray war.

Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of hostile actions and of supporting forces involved in the renewed fighting. Eritrea has denied the allegations.

With clashes intensifying and regional tensions rising, fears are growing of a wider conflict in the Horn of Africa.

Protesters gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to demonstrate against caste-based reservation, with police detaining several participants during the protest.

The demonstration brought the contentious issue of caste-based reservation back into focus, as protesters raised their objections to the existing reservation system and gathered at one of the capital’s designated protest sites.

Police detained several demonstrators as authorities moved to manage the gathering.

The protest comes amid continuing public and political debate over reservation policies in India, including questions surrounding social justice, equal opportunity, representation and the future of affirmative-action policies.
