A social media post by U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked an unexpected copyright controversy.

Japan has reminded Washington that the use of anime characters requires authorization from copyright holders after an AI-generated video portrayed Trump as Naruto Uzumaki, the iconic hero of the globally popular Naruto franchise.

Japanese Minister for Economic Security Kimi Onoda said that copyrighted works, including anime characters, generally require permission for use. She also warned that even if legal infringement is unclear, using characters in ways that differ from the creator’s intentions could damage the work’s image and affect rights holders.

The remarks come after Trump’s AI-generated Naruto-themed video triggered backlash among anime fans and renewed debate over AI-generated content, copyright law, and intellectual property rights.
