Explosions were heard early Sunday morning (October 8) in Gaza as Israel launched retaliatory strikes against Hamas after the militant group launched a surprise attack the day before.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday (October 7) Israel would take “mighty vengeance” for the biggest into Israel in decades.

The attack by Hamas militants in which nearly 500 people were killed was the deadliest day of violence in Israel for 50 years.
