Iran claims it has tested a new domestically developed anti-ship missile against a U.S. Navy warship, with Iranian officials saying the weapon forced American vessels to retreat. The missile has reportedly been identified as the Qasem Basir, with a claimed range of 1,200 kilometres and a manoeuvrable warhead designed to challenge advanced missile defences. But what is known about Iran’s new missile, and how credible are Tehran’s claims about its impact on U.S. naval forces?

Russia has threatened to launch a fresh wave of “systematic strikes” against Kyiv, days after carrying out one of its largest attacks on the Ukrainian capital since the start of the war.

The new strikes will target “decision-making centres and command posts”, alongside drone manufacturing facilities in the city, Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Haze from forest and land fires in Indonesia’s Kalimantan region blanketed the Philippine capital on Tuesday (September 1), pushing air quality to “very unhealthy” and “acutely unhealthy” levels in some areas, according to the country’s environmental bureau, prompting several local governments to suspend classes. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) said 11 of 15 monitoring stations in Metro Manila recorded “acutely unhealthy” PM2.5 readings, with Parañaque’s Don Bosco station hitting an AQI of 300—just one point below the “emergency” threshold. Quezon City suspended in-person classes in all public schools, while other cities advised students and workers to wear masks and limit outdoor activity as the haze is expected to linger through September 3.
