Over 600 killed in Ituri province this year alone | World At War

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly known as Zaire, is Africa’s second largest country. The central African nation, rich in valuable mineral resources, has been plagued by myriad armed groups in its east fighting for control.

The Ituri province has been among the worst affected in DR Congo with United Nations estimating that over 600 civilians have been killed in Ituri this year alone. In addition to this, 345,000 have been displaced from the Ituri region. In the latest violent episode, at least 40 were killed in a span of three days in attacks by armed groups near the city of Bunia in Ituri province.
