A dramatic scene unfolded at Ceuta’s Tarajal Beach as a lone migrant swam ashore and fled Spanish police following one of the largest migrant surges ever recorded at the Spain-Morocco border.

Video from the scene shows the barefoot migrant running into the city before jumping back over the railings onto the shoreline in an attempt to evade officers. Police later searched the beach while workers cleared abandoned life jackets and inflatable buoys left behind after thousands attempted the dangerous crossing.

Spanish authorities say around 50,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta from Morocco by land and sea within days, making it one of the biggest migration crises to hit the European Union’s external border. More than 48,000 migrants have since returned to Morocco, while officials report that at least 67 people have died during the crossings after drowning or being crushed near the border barriers.

The Russia-Ukraine war is intensifying on multiple fronts, with Moscow claiming 1,395 Ukrainian troops were killed in 24 hours as Russian forces push deeper into eastern Ukraine. Kyiv says Russian missile attacks are intensifying, while Moscow claims more than 600 Ukrainian drones were intercepted. Ukrainian drones are also striking deep inside Russia, including a Wildberries facility in Yekaterinburg. With Ukraine struggling to intercept Russian ballistic missiles and working with European defence firms on a new missile shield, the battlefield is rapidly expanding beyond the front lines.
