WION Decodes The Complex And Long History Of Kashmir | Pahalgam Terror Attack | India News

In 1947, Pakistan, fearing that Hari Singh, the ruler of J&K might accede to India, raised an army of Pashtun tribesmen from the North West Frontier Province, and sent them to invade Kashmir. The goal was to spread terror and coerce the state into annexation. The invaders, bent of loot and mayhem, destroyed the oldest city in Kashmir, Baramulla, killed thousands of civilians and burnt entire neighbourhoods. Ironically, their distraction with loot and plunder led to their downfall. Hari Singh appealed to India for help, signed the instrument of accession and the Indian Army reached in time to defend Srinagar. The invaders fled back past Uri where they stayed until the spring of 1948. That’s when the Pakistan Army formally joined the fray and the first India-Pakistan war took place.
