Las fracciones son expresadas por dos números que indican en cuántas partes dividimos un entero y cuántas partes tomamos de él. Por ejemplo, si tomamos tres porciones de una pizza cortada en ocho tendremos tres octavos (3/8), donde el número 3 es llamado numerador, y el 8 es llamado denominador.

Sólo se pueden sumar o restar fracciones de igual denominador, y la forma de hacerlo es sumar o restar los numeradores y colocarle el mismo denominador al resultado. Por ejemplo, si sumamos 3/6 y 2/6, sumamos 3+2=6, y nos quedan 6/6. Luego, si hacemos 6 dividido 6 obtendremos 1. Las fracciones de igual numerador y denominador siempre representan a un entero.

Si tenemos fracciones con distinto denominador, antes de sumar o restar se busca un denominador común para hallar las fracciones equivalentes Las fracciones equivalentes se obtienen multiplicando o dividiendo el numerador y el denominaor por el mismo número. Por ejemplo, para restar 2/8 a 3/4, podemos convertir 3/4 en 6/8, mutiplicando el numerador y el denominador por 2. Luego restaremos 2/8 y 6/8, y obtendremos 4/8 como resultado.
