Typhoon Dolphin, described as the most powerful tropical cyclone to hit China this year, made landfall along the country’s eastern coast on Sunday, August 9, bringing torrential rain and powerful winds.

The storm packed maximum sustained winds of around 42 metres per second, or 151 km/h, near its centre at landfall. The powerful system has triggered warnings of flooding and landslides across several parts of eastern and central China.

Heavy rainfall is forecast through August 10 across Zhejiang, Shanghai, northern Fujian, northeastern Jiangxi, central and southern Anhui, and much of Jiangsu.

Forecasters warn that parts of central and eastern Zhejiang could receive between 250 and 500 millimetres of rainfall, significantly increasing the risk of flooding.
