RICHARD McMUNN’S SMART INTRODUCTION FOR JOB INTERVIEWS!
One of the most important moments in any job interview is when the interviewer says:
“Please introduce yourself” or “Tell me about yourself.”

This is not an ice-breaker. It is a powerful opportunity to take control of the interview, demonstrate confidence, and show the hiring manager exactly why you are the right person for the role.

Unfortunately, most candidates waste this opportunity by talking aimlessly about their background. That’s why I teach my proven SMART INTRODUCTION framework—used by successful candidates across every industry.

What Is the SMART Introduction?

The SMART Introduction is a structured, professional response that lasts under 60 seconds and immediately positions you as a strong hire.

SMART stands for:
S – Situation
M – Motivation
A – Achievements
R – Reason Why They Should Hire You
T – Targets in the Role

Let’s break it down.
S – Situation (Your Current Position)
Start by clearly stating who you are professionally right now. This gives the interviewer instant context.

Example:
“I’m currently working as a warehouse operative in a fast-paced distribution environment…”

If you’re a graduate, career changer, or returning to work, simply be honest and confident.

M – Motivation (What Drives You)
Next, explain what motivates you at work. Employers hire people who care about doing a great job.

Example:
“…and I’m motivated by working to clear targets, maintaining high standards, and contributing positively to my team.”

This shows attitude, reliability, and work ethic.

A – Achievements (Evidence You Perform Well)
Now provide one strong, relevant achievement. This proves you don’t just talk well—you deliver results.

Example:
“In my current role, I was recognised for improving accuracy levels and consistently meeting daily performance targets.”

Keep it short, measurable if possible, and relevant.

R – Reason Why They Should Hire You (Your Value)
This is where you clearly state why YOU are a good hire. Do not be vague—be direct and confident.

Example:
“You should hire me because I’m reliable, quick to learn, and I take ownership of my responsibilities to ensure tasks are completed correctly and on time.”

Employers want certainty. This section provides it.

T – Targets in the Role (Future Focus)
Finish by showing that you are already thinking like an employee by mentioning specific goals you intend to achieve.

Example:
“In this role, my target would be to quickly learn your systems, meet performance expectations within the first few weeks, and become a dependable team member you can trust.”

This demonstrates ambition, focus, and long-term thinking.

✔ Works for any role or experience level
✔ Creates a strong first impression immediately

Hiring managers often decide very early whether a candidate is credible. A SMART introduction ensures you start the interview on the front foot.

9 CV WRITING TIPS TO GET YOU HIRED
✅ Tip 1. MAKE SURE YOU USE A CLEAN, SIMPLE CV LAYOUT!
Make sure you avoid complicated designs, tables, columns, text boxes, images and graphics. The Applicant Tracking Systems cannot read these, and you will get rejected.

✅ TIP 2. USE A STANDARD FONT
I strongly recommend you stick to an ATS-friendly CV font such as Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, or Times New Roman. The size of your font should be either 10 or 12 – use the same size throughout your CV for best results.

✅ TIP 3. USE SIMPLE CV SECTION HEADINGS
I strongly recommend you use headings that ATS recognises. Later in this training lesson, I will reveal which sections you must use on your CV.

✅ TIP 4. MAKE SURE YOU USE KEYWORDS FROM THE JOB DESCRIPTION.
This is very important. Applicant Tracking Systems look for role-specific terms. Copy important keywords directly from the job advert to increase your chances of success.

✅ TIP 5. MAKE SURE YOUR CV IS ERROR-FREE.
This is very important! If your CV contains spelling, grammar or punctuation mistakes, it will get rejected. If you can’t write correct English, the hiring manager will assume that you cannot meet the basic requirements of the job role – which are good communication skills and attention to detail.

✅ TIP 6. SUBMIT YOUR CV IN THE CORRECT FORMAT
Unless the employer or job advert says otherwise, send your CV as a Word document. The majority of Applicant Tracking Systems struggle to read PDFs.

✅ TIP 7. USE BULLET POINTS WHEN LISTING ACHIEVEMENTS
ATS reads bullet points well, and hiring managers love them too, because they are quick and easy to read.

✅ TIP 8. USE ‘NUMBERS’ ON YOUR CV TO VALIDATE ACHIEVEMENTS
Numbers are ATS-friendly, they will grab the attention of the hiring manager, and they also boost credibility. For example:

“Reduced errors by 30%”
“Handled 40+ calls per day”
“Delivered projects 2 weeks early”

Numbers are a great way to make your CV stand out and get past ATS!

✅ TIP 9. TAILOR YOUR CV FOR EVERY JOB APPLICATION
One of the biggest mistakes candidates make when applying for jobs is that they use the same CV for every application. A “one CV fits all” approach always fails to get past the Applicant Tracking System, so make sure you tailor yours for the specific job role you are applying for.

4. The “Confidence Pause” Trick
Nervous candidates rush their words, over-explain, and weaken their message. Confident people pause, think, and speak clearly.

Hack: Before answering, pause for two seconds.
Then start with:
“That’s a great question — here’s how I would approach it…”

That tiny pause makes you appear composed, intelligent, and in control.

5. Use the STAR Method (Because the Brain Loves Stories)

7. Close the Interview Like a Professional
Most candidates end weakly with “Thanks for your time.” High performers finish like they’re ready to contribute.

Hack: Use this closing statement:
“I’m very excited about this position. Based on what we’ve discussed, I’m confident I can add value quickly. Is there anything I can clarify that would help you feel 100% comfortable hiring me?”

This shows leadership, confidence, and commitment.
