Denmark has summoned Russia’s ambassador after a Russian frigate fired two emergency flares at a Danish military helicopter over the Baltic Sea.

The Danish Armed Forces said one flare passed within a short distance of the Fennec helicopter, which was carrying out a routine mission to photograph the Russian warship.

The incident has triggered alarm in Copenhagen, with Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Tuesday condemned as “reckless”.

Denmark’s Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus has called an all-party meeting to brief political leaders as tensions between Russia and Europe continue to rise.

The incident comes amid wider European accusations that Moscow is conducting hybrid warfare to destabilise the continent.
