5 QUICK TIPS FOR PREPARING FOR A HOTEL MANAGER INTERVIEW (PASS FIRST TIME!)
Preparing for a Hotel Manager interview requires more than knowing hotel operations. You must show strong leadership, exceptional guest service, commercial awareness, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Hiring managers want someone who can lead teams, solve problems fast, and protect standards while improving results.
Here are 5 quick tips to help you prepare and stand out from other candidates.
TIP #1: Research the Hotel Properly
Before the interview, learn everything you can about the hotel. Is it luxury, boutique, family-focused, or business-led? Read the website, check social media, and scan recent reviews on Google and TripAdvisor. Make notes on guest expectations and what the hotel prides itself on. In the interview, reference what you found, for example: “I noticed guest reviews regularly mention your friendly service, which strongly aligns with my leadership style.”
TIP #2: Prepare STAR Examples That Prove You Can Lead
Most Hotel Manager interviews include behavioural questions such as “Describe a time you handled a complaint” or “Tell me about a time you dealt with conflict.” Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Prepare at least 3 strong examples that demonstrate leadership, problem-solving, teamwork, and excellent guest care. Always finish with a measurable result such as improved guest satisfaction, fewer complaints, or a positive review outcome.
TIP #3: Know the Key KPIs (And How to Improve Them)
Hotel management is commercial. You should be ready to discuss KPIs such as occupancy rate, ADR, RevPAR, guest satisfaction, costs, and staff turnover. Mention strategies like improving upselling, refining staff rotas, reducing waste, and increasing repeat bookings. This shows you understand the role goes beyond service — it’s about performance.
TIP #4: Show You Can Handle Pressure Calmly
Hotels are unpredictable. Overbookings, staff absences, maintenance faults, and guest issues can happen at any time. Your goal is to show calm leadership. A great phrase to use is: “I prioritise guest safety and experience first, communicate clearly, stabilise the situation, and then implement a long-term fix to prevent reoccurrence.”
TIP #5: Finish With a Strong Closing Statement
Many candidates fail at the final stage. Finish confidently by summarising your value: “I believe I’m a strong fit because I lead teams positively, protect service standards, and I’m commercially focused.” Then ask smart questions such as: “What are the hotel’s biggest challenges right now?” or “What does success look like in the first 90 days?”
If you use these five tips, you’ll walk into your Hotel Manager interview fully prepared and ready to win the job.
