As India hosts the 2026 BRICS Summit, the bloc is stepping up discussions on local-currency trade, cross-border payments and financial interoperability. India has proposed linking central bank digital currencies among BRICS nations to make international payments faster and easier.

The push could reduce dependence on dollar-based payment systems, but replacing the US dollar as the world’s dominant reserve currency remains a far bigger challenge. India has also made clear that its payment proposals are not designed to replace the dollar.

Russia, China and other BRICS members have increasingly used national currencies for bilateral trade, while the expanded bloc gives emerging economies a larger platform to discuss alternatives to Western-dominated financial systems.
