Wildfire hits Indonesia’s Central Borneo province in Pulang Pisau Regency. Indonesia, a vast archipelago, has for weeks battled wildfires that have led to school closures and thousands of people requiring medical treatment, with smoke also reaching neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore. The health ministry said 3.4 million people across seven provinces on Borneo and Sumatra were at risk of respiratory infections, with air quality in parts of Central Kalimantan reaching hazardous levels. More than 200,000 hectares have burned since January, driven by El Niño–fueled dry conditions, prompting Indonesia to deploy additional troops, helicopters for water‑bombing and cloud‑seeding operations, while Malaysia closed nearly 600 schools in Sarawak and Singapore issued health advisories.
