Indigenous Taiwanese Revive Lost Sea Route

A group of indigenous Taiwanese set off on Monday aboard a hand-built wooden canoe to paddle to the Philippines across the Bashi Channel. The Tao people of Orchid Island say the journey is intended to revive a maritime route that was dormant for hundreds of years and restore a lost cultural connection with the Batanes Islands. The 20-seat canoe, named “Ovayan” or “Golden Friendship,” was built by artisans from six communities, and the 24-hour trip will be shared by 60 rowers.
