NASA’s Psyche spacecraft is making a breathtaking close flyby of Mars as it races toward one of the solar system’s most mysterious objects — the metal-rich asteroid Psyche. During the gravity assist maneuver, the spacecraft will pass just 2,800 miles above the Martian surface, using the planet’s gravity to gain speed and save fuel for the second half of its 2.2-billion-mile mission.

Scientists believe asteroid Psyche may be the exposed iron-and-nickel core of an ancient protoplanet, offering rare clues about how rocky planets like Earth formed billions of years ago.
