Guatemalan Volcano Eruption Ends, Locals Return Home

Guatemala’s Institute of Volcanology has declared the eruption of the Fuego volcano officially over, two days after it began spewing lava and ash on August 3. Authorities had ordered preventive evacuations of several villages near the 3,763-metre stratovolcano, with around 1,400–1,700 people taking shelter as pyroclastic flows and ash plumes reached up to six kilometres into the sky. With activity now subsiding, many residents are returning home, though officials urge continued vigilance due to the risk of mudflows and ashfall in the Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla regions.
