Let’s face it, we all want *real* holo makeup in our lives, but is it possible? We tested out a few things to see if we could DIY some holographic makeup. We attempt to make holo lipstick, lip gloss, lip balm and eyeshadow/highlighter… let’s see which works!

Hey guys, just to address a few comments. Please read this before commenting because this might address some of your questions.
Firstly, all of this is holo. The pink glitter is also holo but we didn't hold it up to the light to show the colour shift, sorry about that.
Secondly, we sadly don't know the perfect lighting set up to capture holographic but we did some of the normal tricks like show it under the phone torch. The holo didn't show up as well as we would have liked, but it was also pretty dull when it was mixed with the grey looking glitter which toned it all down in, so what you see it is pretty accurate.
Thirdly if you wanted to recreate any of these then I recommend looking out for eye and lip safe holo glitter. You can get holo glitter that is eye and lip safe but it is just harder to find (the finely milled one we used was eye and lip safe).
Lastly we might revisit this with more holo products in the future so keep you eye out for a round two! x BN

Hmmmm i was wondering, why you dont use glyserin as a binder, a little aloe vera gel to make them not too sticky, and a dark blue mica powder or or green or purple mica colours, so these eyeshadows will looked a lot pigmented. I think thts why they all looked very silver & glumphy bcoz you dont add a base colour on them … 😉

Spectreflare (yikes, spelling) is a liquid version of holo I have used in nail polish production and works much better than the pigments. It would potentially work better in a gloss or lippy. 💄💄💄

Nail glitter and makeup glitter is not the same. Exspecily by the eyes and mouth, you can get small cuts on the eyes or breath in large flacks. Be careful!

it looks better under the torch because the lamps you use are probably diffused light (indirect, so with something making the light spread evenly)

Why not just use biodegradable glitters? They’re not hard to find. You can typically find them in craft stores and any retailer that sells soap making supplies. But it is good that you pointed out that plastic glitter is not safe to use in cosmetics. Not everyone does that so thank you!

I recently bought a lip gloss that's holographic. It's from a MLM brand known for their smudge proof lipstick (don't really want to promote the brand name here because I'm not a MLM fan). It's a clear gloss with holo glitter and whilst it's cool, I have to put it on so sparingly or it will look like I have grey lipstick on lol. I think holo glitter is always just going to be problematic.
