Scrap the offside rule for one season and see whether fans, managers and players overwhelmingly prefer it or not. Football originally didn't have it so you can argue it is a return to the ways of the founding fathers and the pure tradition.

  2. @ZaydDepaor

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

How about just scrap the offside rule? They keep messing with it and creating complexity and confusion. Allow goal hangers, it will be the same for both teams…a goal hanger will mean their team loses a man…it will also stretch out the play rather than condensing it between two offside traps or 'zones'… VAR is a disaster for football, it kills the spontaneity and fluidity of football and creates different standard/process/rules of adjudication for different levels and stages in competitions which is wrong.

  3. @PJR29787

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

It may work… but you could look at the other side, teams might sit really deep and never try to catch someone offside because it would be extreemly hard to catch someone off with these rules so in some games it may actually produce less goals (parking the bus)

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

Why does Jamie vacuum in air like that so often???

  5. @mohhassanabdurajak3274

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

VAR is suppose to check offside but. Livful game , VAR did not check the Fulham goal whether it was onside or offside. And they allowed a push on salah.

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

    Jamie is spot on

  7. @stevekm3816

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

If one bit of your body has to be on. People will play with a low block and we’d have even less goals

  8. @Steve-390

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

    Offside is offside stop whining

  9. @EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

The lines need to be drawn from the waist. Offside has never been about someone's outstretched limb or if they are leaning more forward. Linesmen/women never used to spot if it was a foot or armpit offside – it's impossible for the naked eye to see that. It's as if the rule has changed because of the introduction of VAR.

  10. @adam-yk6yd

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

If you give attackers this kind of advantage most defenses will never leave the edge of their penalty area. You'll kill opportunities for fast, exciting counterattacks and get less goals. A staggering lack of foresight from the pros.

  11. @andrewgoddard5556

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

Daylight would be very tough for defenders, don’t know whether I agree with it or disagree, but I would expect daylight to be easier for a computer to spot an offside/not offside, which would speed up VAR

  12. @bobbyjameson7065

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

The FA should take a look at how off-sides is judged in the NHL. I'm not proposing we implement a "blue-line" but allow players to drag a foot and have the majority of their body off-sides as long as a part of their foot is on-sides. I completely agree with Carra, the spirit of the off-sides rule was to prevent goal-hanging.

  13. @alvinphua4561

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

Perhaps if there is a line across right at the top of the box, Souness's idea can be applied before that line but once you are in the box half zone, current rule applies.

  14. @nnevynn

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

Jamie and Souness are both missing the point of the frustration I think. For me, and everyone I've been talking to the problem is that VAR does not incorporate "clear & obvious" come to offside decisions. Did the VAR stop the exact right frame the ball left the foot? Are the lines drawn 100% right on the knee och the big toe? When the margins are so small we don't even see it with the lines on our TV then it's not "clear & obvious" for me. And also the time aspect off this, if it takes more then say 30 seconds to make a call for offside, it's not "clear & obvious".

They need make the rule and the way VAR works effective. They way it is now kills the game. At the same time, it will always be discussions, but where it is now. It's terrible.

And by the way, it really was handball on Van Dijk, say something else and you are to colored about it. 😛 The question is did VAR really implemented the rule right? I would say no, VvD played the opening long ball right after the played the ball with his upper arm. Oh well. ^^

  15. @SamS-uv2ql

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

It wouldnt make it any simpler at all.

It would just move the line about 50cm towards the goal, that is all.

Same debates about whether it was a clear and obvious error, same debate about being offside by millimetres etc.

  16. @rocharoch

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

All players will soon have nose jobs and buzzcuts just so the chances of them being offside is slimmed down ffs

  17. @yambo000

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

I don't think the FA has the authority to make that kind of a change on it's own, UEFA and FIFA would have to go along with it as well. From, you have to be onside, to a bit of you has to be onside is a massive change and it would change the way defenders are being coached today.
Maybe it would be for the better overall but it's not a small change, it requires a wider debate and not just Conor Coady being frustrated about his team's goal being disallowed lol

  18. @MasterPig11

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

    Solution: Don't be offside.

  19. @duskomaglovski4021

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

It should be a full body in ofside not this

  20. @phiavir5594

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

Souness has the right idea. People are just too reactionary and dumb to see it.

There's 2 issues with VAR: the millimetre decisions are pedantic, and it's ruining attacking football, because no attacker will make runs anymore if it stays like this.

The best answer is just obvious. Give the attacker some form of advantage. Whether it's Souness idea or simply giving them a 20cm line advantage. Whatever.

At least then, when the decision is made via accurate means, we get rid of the right to complain about such a tight call, because the advantage had already been given to the attacker

  21. @darrenb3214

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

The way I would sort out offside is instead of the part of your body you could score with being offside, it should be the part of your body you did score with. So the rules are your shoulder could be offside, but how many goals are scored with a shoulder? So for example, if your head is offside and your right foot is onside and you score with your right foot, then the goal stands. If you score with your head, then it's disallowed. I know that doesn't stop the frustration for fans, but it definitely has the correct outcome.

  22. @ahmedhanif911

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

Dumb rule players would never be offside be hard to defend against

  23. @jamier26

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

All it takes is for attackers to start their runs a split second later. Just like in Rugby, you make sure you're not initiating a forward pass by passing a little backwards. In American football, the defense avoids offsides by watching the snap.

  24. @MegaBoeboe

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

Offside VAR needs to become real-time and automated like goal-line technology. No bias, no delays, no decision reversal. Just binary and preferably immediate (not allowing play to continue as is the fashion lately).

  25. @PresamSambea

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

Easy change to VAR and offside.. If it's not clear enough to see within 10 seconds, it's not an obvious error and the decision should go in favor of the attacking team! Done!

  26. @stumoo4049

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

Why not just get rid of offside, trial it some pre-season tournaments and see how it goes, problem solved…..offside is a big rule but rules can evolve

  27. @prowsy8825

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

Calculations should be scraped and we should only have one line on the position of the defender. If its not clear and obvious from several eyes that the attacker has in any way surpassed the line, the goal should be given. This way is easier for the officials, players and fans to understand. We have to keep its simple, football is an entertainment business

  28. @luckycards56895

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

let's do the torso is on side then it is onside . cut the arms and legs off.

  29. @theviennesecafe8537

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

Has no one ever watched rugby and how the video reffing works there? maybe take an example and try to make it as good as that if not better!

  30. @samfuller3309

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

I'll listen right up until Carragher starts talking. His accent is painful.

  31. @famguy1985

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

The rule should be if your foot is onside, you should be on side. All this finger stuff is bollox

  32. @honeybadger9425

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

I think the IFAB need to make alot of friendly games and try many different ideas and see how they effect the game against VAR. From No offside at all to adding a line to changing the penalty box size and so on.

  33. @asdfghjfresh

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

My only problem with VAR is that I don't trust the technology when the decisions are an inch or two off…I just don't think the tech has advanced to that level yet. Firstly, they have to stop the frame at the exact point at which the assisting player kicks the ball. What technology do they have to prove that they stopped it at that exact moment that contact is made?? As far as I know, they manually have to slow down the replay and then stop the frame at "assumed" impact, what assurance is there that that is 100% accurate. Because the thing is, when you're talking about centimeters offside, this is very important! because if you take it a frame of two back, then it becomes onside instead.

Secondly the lines they draw are dodgy at best, 1. they seem too thick and 2. there is manual intervention in that the VAR ref has to pinpoint exactly where to start drawing the line…That creates room for human error in itself. For example the offside for Firmino's goal against Aston villa, the VAR ref first drew the line at his armpit but it was onside, then he erased it and drew another line that happened to be offside. This problem arises because as I keep stressing, it's just too close to call and VAR has too much manual intervention to accurately detect offside when it is just a few centimeters.

The advantage should be given to the attacker in such instances or at least go with the on field ref's decision. Everything else about VAR, I'm on board with!

  34. @thenavigateur8460

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

I will grow incredibly long hair and drag it along the pitch to always be onside, should the "no part onside" rule come into play

  35. @JWC07

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

Souness needs to stop being a pundit

  36. @markpieratt

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

and actually, abolishing offsides does work in high level football.

  37. @markpieratt

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

if FIFA was smart, they'd just abolish offsides altogether. seriously though, what VAR is doing to offsides is rolling back to even is "off". the reason it was moved to even is "on" , was to increase scoring. which worked. it also works to reduce goals to go back to even is "off". and before anyone says this is *not* going back to "even is off", think about how VAR will affect the runs of the attackers.

the real tragedy here is how this is killing the spirit and the soul of the game. it demoralizes players and confuses celebration. Mike Riley, you should move to fix this problem straight away! it's doing damage.

  38. @footballchronicles6783

    February 28, 2024 at 11:52 am

I say get rid of VAR for league games, and implement VAR for cup matches.
