I always fumble up on P&L questions. It's like they're asking me to recreate a manager meeting and go over previous earnings with them.

This was very generic. I don't feel like you have ever worked in a restaurant or know much about the industry. What you gave us here is a lot of word salad and none of the answers to the tough questions I've got in interviews in my many years in restaurant management. You are a grifter. Time is money. You have wasted my time and therefore my money. Please just go make self help videos for people who want to "feel good" about themselves and stop trying to "help" people with their careers for clicks.

    March 12, 2024 at 5:08 pm

I'm sorry, but I feel like so much of this is just plain wrong…
For starters, the 1st questions isn't answered to the fullest… I mean, nowadays the employer wants to have an idea of who we are as a person and by answering like you did, it seems to me that you'd just be focusing on one thing. It's not a sales pitch, they're asking "who are you and what drives you to become a restaurant manager" and not "what set of skills do you have that will help ensure your success as a restaurant manager"…
Answering in such a fashion would only make you look cocky and arrogant.

Also the fallowing answer isn't that good either, I mean, c'mon – employers aren't stupid! Rear-licking won't do you any good! Be honest while answering questions. It's your point of view they want to hear, not what you think they want to hear! If the restaurant isn't doing great and you answer that "oh I want to work here because your restaurant is so great", it'll only show how much you lack of clear vision and competence. Whereas if you answer "I want to work here because I believe I'd be able to lend a strong hand with …" then you'd score some major points.

Don't get me wrong, of course you always manage to bring in the restaurant into the conversation by comparison and mentioning projects or a vision to face the actual challenges, but no place is perfect, so no need to put it on a pedestal.

The 3rd answer is much much better! Way to make it even better is to exemplify – how do those theoretical skills apply when on the job. Use a situation you've encountered by the past to make the person on the other end understand that you're not just all talk.

4th answer is indeed an amazing answer! I'd just add that I'd be present as much as possible in order to ensure the standards and trainings I set are indeed followed and also in order to give the example and to lead and motivate my team to always go further and beyond the guest's expectations (e.g. 1+1=3 – if a guest asks for a pen and paper, not only would I comply but I'd also go the extra mile and present him a glass of water).

5th answer is also very good – the main thing is to keep the guest happy, wether they're right or not. There's a simple anagram to help with that: LEARN – Listen, Emphasize, Apologize, React, Notify. Listen carefully, mind the non-verbal language (body posture), emphasize the guest's concern in order to show you relate and therefore understand, apologize as many times the guests only want to make sure you do better and saying you're sorry already makes up for much of it, react to the guests concerns by responding with proper action, and finally notify the guest with the solution and which a time stamp for executing it (e.g. I've seen your steak back to the kitchen and you'll have it at the wished temperature in 5 minutes).

When applying for such a position, make sure you know what are the challenges you'll be facing at the company and the particular set of skills you'll need to ensure you're successful – it's less rather about what the company currently is but more about who you are and where you'll take it.

2 INTERVIEW QUESTIONS 95% OF CANDIDATES FAIL! DON’T SAY THIS! #jobinterview #careeradvice

Published

2 INTERVIEW QUESTIONS 95% OF CANDIDATES FAIL! DON’T SAY THIS!
Most candidates fail their interview before it even gets started… because they give weak, predictable answers to these 2 questions.

❌ “Why should we hire you?”
Wrong: “Because I’m the best person for the job.”
👉 No proof. No value. No impact.

❌ “Why do you want this job?”
Wrong: “Because I need the money.”
👉 Self-focused. Zero interest in the company.

Here’s what SMART candidates do instead:

✅ Why should we hire you?
“I’m a strong fit for the role, I can make an immediate impact, and I’ll deliver results that give you a return on your salary.”

✅ Why do you want this job?
“I want to work for your company because of your reputation, values, and the opportunity to contribute and grow long-term.”

💡 Don’t be average. Be the candidate they REMEMBER.
